Bloodstream infection with Oligella ureolytica: a case report and review of the literature.

Oligella ureolytica is an emerging bacteria rarely implicated as a human pathogen. It is mostly recovered from urinary and respiratory tract specimens as a commensal organism, but very seldom from bloodstream infections. It is rarely reported in the literature, probably due to misidentification of the organism or uncertainty of its pathogenicity.

Early 2016/17 vaccine effectiveness estimates against influenza A(H3N2): I-MOVE multicentre case control studies at primary care and hospital levels in Europe

We measured early 2016/17 season influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) against influenza A(H3N2) in Europe using multicentre case control studies at primary care and hospital levels. IVE at primary care level was 44.1%, 46.9% and 23.4% among 0-14, 15-64 and ≥ 65 year-olds, and 25.7% in the influenza vaccination target group. At hospital level, IVE was 2.5%, 7.9% and 2.4% among ≥ 65, 65-79 and ≥...

Group B streptococcal infections in elderly adults.

Elderly adults account for >40% of persons with invasive group B streptococcal (GBS) disease and for >50% of GBS-associated deaths in the United States. The prevalence of colonization among healthy elderly adults (approximately 25%) is similar to that among women of childbearing age. Delineating contributions of comorbid conditions, altered integrity of anatomical barriers, and abnormalities in...

Hospital-Based Strategies to Improve Pneumococcal Vaccination Rates in the Elderly

Pneumococcal infection causes approximately 40,000 deaths in the United States each year, accounting for more deaths than any other vaccine-preventable bacterial disease [1]. The highest mortality rates occur among the elderly, in whom the case-fatality rate for pneumococcal bacteremia is approximately 30% to 40%. It is estimated that approximately half of these deaths could be prevented throug...
